Musing/Ranting
Aug. 7th, 2012 01:09 am It really pisses me off when people say that Cosette is somehow less than Eponine because she's "girly" and not "strong and independent."
First off, Cosette is strong as all hell. Do you even know what kind of strength it takes to have that kind of childhood and come out of it as such a good person? Of course, she did have Valjean teaching her what was good and what wasn't, but still, that requires so much inner strength.
Second, why does that make her less of a character? Just because Cosette is "girly" doesn't make her a bad character. A female character can wear dresses and generally act "girly" and still be strong.
That's a problem I've seen a lot in book lately. All female characters have to be strong fighters that scoff at dresses and are only into "cool, badass things." So what if a girl likes to wear dresses? So what if a girl isn't at the front lines of the battle or kicking ass and taking names? That shouldn't make her any less than the girls that are.
tl;dr: Jemi reads fanfic and it inspires a rant about female characters
